The College of Maritime Education (CME) of Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation (MSEUF), through its Learning Development Center (LDC) and coordinator Capt. Crispino Portes, launched a tutoring and mentoring program to strengthen students’ literacy skills.

The program focused on building technical vocabulary and improving reading comprehension in maritime texts, manuals, and international regulations. Organizers said the effort aimed to support both classroom performance and communication in shipboard settings.

Faculty mentors and trained peer tutors conducted the sessions in small groups and one-on-one formats. Activities included vocabulary-building exercises using maritime glossaries, reading drills on charts and manuals, scenario-based discussions, and oral and written communication practice.

“This initiative gives our students the opportunity to improve their understanding of maritime texts while developing the communication skills necessary for their future responsibilities,” Portes said.

The college linked the program to Sustainable Development Goals 4 (Quality Education) by providing focused academic support, 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) by preparing competent graduates for the maritime industry, and 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions) by promoting safety and compliance in maritime operations.
