Web Content and Digital Engagement Officer John Rover Sinag delivered a lecture on digital citizenship and responsible social media use during the Guidance Lecture Series of Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation Catanauan at the Dr. Roman T. Serrano Gymnasium, Nov. 18.

Sinag presented “Beyond Likes and Shares: Digital Citizenship and Responsible Social Media Use for the Future,” emphasizing the importance of critical thinking, ethical behavior and online safety among students in an increasingly digital world.

Sinag highlighted that social media remains a dominant platform among Filipinos, with millions spending several hours online daily, making digital responsibility a critical life skill.

The lecture focused on the four pillars of digital citizenship: digital identity, digital literacy, digital safety and digital responsibility. Sinag explained that students must be mindful of their digital footprint, as their online presence can shape future academic and career opportunities.

He also discussed the growing risks of misinformation, scams and online harm, encouraging students to verify sources, practice safe browsing habits and protect their personal information.

“Think before you click — is it true, helpful, inspiring, necessary and kind,” Sinag said, reminding students to promote respectful and responsible online interactions.

The session also tackled the psychological effects of social media, including comparison, fear of missing out and excessive screen time, while encouraging healthy online habits such as setting boundaries and curating content.

Sinag urged students to maximize social media for growth by building a positive online presence, developing digital portfolios and exploring opportunities in freelancing, content creation and remote work.

“You are not just users. You are Filipino digital citizens shaping the future,” he said.

The lecture reflects MSEUF’s commitment to mindfulness, service and excellence by equipping students with the knowledge and values needed to navigate the digital landscape responsibly. It also promotes transformative learning by integrating real-world digital challenges into student development.
