ANALYZING THE LITERARY TRANSLATION OF THE FAULT IN OUR STARS

This study is an exploration of how idioms and figures of speech were translated from the original English version of the novel “The Fault in Our Stars” by John Green to the Filipino version of Danton Remoto. Using the interpretive approach to translation studies as the theoretical lens, this research examined how the Filipino translator understood the meanings of the English idioms and figures of speech and how these were translated into the Filipino language. Using the content analysis as qualitative research design, the data consisting of the texts in both the source and target languages were analyzed. Qualitative data were coded and categorized to determine how the translator interpreted the meaning of idioms and figures of speech and how much of the essence of these literary divides were retained in the Filipino version. On a practical level, the findings of this study would enable future translators to be more conscious in preserving the literary quality from the source language to the target language.
