CHARACTERISTICS OF SELECTED SCHOOLS IN MATHEMATICS GRADE 6 IN THE DISTRICT OF PAGBILAO: BASIS FOR CREATING ENHANCEMENT PROGRAM IN MATHEMATICS
Area of Research
Abstract
Mathematics occupies a central position in the school curriculum. It is a core
subject from the primary through secondary levels of the educational system. The
purpose of the study was to investigate the characteristics of selected schools in
Mathematics Grade 6. The quantitative and qualitative approaches were used to
collect data from 170 respondents who were chosen through multistage sampling. It
was guided by 3 research objectives: the performance level in Mathematics of
selected schools, the perception of teacher-respondents on the success and/or
failures in Math and the factors which facilitate classroom practices. The findings
established that the performance in mathematics of selected schools was at risk
based on the result of the numeracy tests which is below the standard passing score.
Success and/or failure in Mathematics was found out to be affected by qualities of the
teacher, strategies, instructional materials, medium of instruction and pupil’s behavior
and teacher’s attitudes towards teaching the subject. The enhancement program for
Mathematics was designed to address the learning gaps in the numeracy.
