UNPUBLISHED LULLABIES IN SELECTED TOWNS OF QUEZON PROVINCE: A CULTURAL STUDY

Completed2017

Abstract

This study documented the unpublished lullabies in selected towns of Quezon Province. It also described the people’s culture in various towns of the province through the thematic lyrics of the lullabies identified. The unpublished lullabies were documented using musical notation to visually represent the melody sung by the informants. In this way, the songs would be preserved and could even be used as a localized instructional material to propagate Quezon’s culture. This descriptive study used 11 informants from the different towns of Quezon Province namely, Lucban, Tayabas, Sampaloc in the first district, Lucena City, Sariaya, Candelaria and Dolores in the second district, Catanauan and San Narciso in the third district, and Alabat and Plaridel in the fourth district. Results revealed that the values held and way of life of Quezonians are reflected in the lyrics of the lullabies. Promise of a reward to a child, love for the father, mother’s love towards her child, threatening, praising, adoration, and daily household chores are some of the emerging themes in the unpublished lullabies. In order to promote Quezon’s culture, the teachers of Quezon Province should adopt the lesson exemplars which are the outputs of this study.
