LEISURE INVOLVEMENT AND JOB SATISFACTION OF TEACHERS: BASIS FOR DEVELOPING WELLNESS PROGRAM IN THE WORKPLACE

Abstract

This study aimed to identify the demographic profile, level of job satisfaction in terms of motivating factors and hygiene factors, and leisure activities involvement in terms of attraction, self-expression, and centrality of the respondents. Additionally, it also determined the significant relationship between the level of job satisfaction and the degree of leisure involvement, significant difference on the level of job satisfaction of respondents when they are grouped according to demographic profile, and significant difference on the degree of leisure involvement of respondents when they are grouped according to demographic profile. The study was conducted in a secondary school in Quezon where there are 150 respondents of the study. The Weighted Arithmetic Mean (WAM), Smirnov Kolmogov and Shapiro Wilk, and Kruskal Wallis were used to analyze the data. The work of education reform has actively promoted and required that teachers be more specialized, diversified, and technological. This has placed heavy job pressure and loading on teachers and reduced leisure and relaxation. This research envisioned to propose a wellness program that will be helpful among the teachers of a secondary school in Quezon. Participating in leisure activities relieves people of work fatigue, monotony, and work pressures, and attains self-realization from work disruption and indicated that whether in schools, the workplace, family, or community, leisure activities play a leverage role in life and establish a process whereby people develop skills, interests, and competence that enhance and improve their lives. Leisure is a self-development tool that includes physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and social benefits. Respondents were mostly 41-50 years old females, with units in Master’s program and have worked for less than ten years in the institution. The overall weighted arithmetic mean of the level of job satisfaction in terms of motivating factors is 3.27 (0.414) and was verbally described as Strongly Agree. The respondents agreed that they were satisfied with the pay and benefits that they received in their work. The respondents stated that they received due recognition for every tasks that they did excellently as supported by a mean of 3.27 (0.414). It was also revealed that the respondents strongly agreed with the positive indicators of hygiene factors in the level of job satisfaction of the respondents. In terms of work conditions, the respondents strongly agreed that the location, rules, working hours, and physical surroundings are conducive for them with a mean of 3.45 (0.402). The respondents strongly agreed that the goals and workloads were fully explained to them. The respondents were very much involved in attraction. Further, they were moderately involved in self-expression and centrality including statements. The Overall Job Satisfaction vs Overall Leisure Involvement have a significant correlation and Moderately Strong Positive Correlation with correlation coefficient of 0.613. There is no significant difference on the level of job satisfaction of respondents when they are grouped according to demographic profile. The results indicated that the overall Leisure Involvement of respondents has no significant difference when grouped according to demographic profile. Based on the findings and conclusions, the following recommendations were formulated: for the teachers, school administrators and future researchers, the teachers were suggested to attend the proposed wellness program. On the other hand, school administrators were encouraged to continuously support the proposed wellness program because it will be for the benefits of the school clients and teachers and to the future researchers to do further research on the other variables which are related to the wellness program. This study confined itself to the analysis of job satisfaction of teachers and its correlation to have a leisure involvement. The study is descriptive in nature.
