Transforming Science teachers from specialist to generalist: Problems met by the Science teachers in teaching science with spiral progression approach as revealed by the teachers of Quezon National High School

Abstract
This study attempted to reveal the problems met by the science teachers in teaching
science with spiral progression approach. Specifically, the study sought to identify the
demographic characteristics of the respondents in terms of age, highest educational attainment,
specialization in science, seminars attended related to K-12 curriculum, teaching experience and
handles grade level, the extent of utilization of science curriculum extent of competency of the
teacher based on NCBTS , Mastery of the content and other comments and opinion in teaching
science with spiral progression approach.
The researcher used the descriptive method of research which involve collection,
tabulation, analysis and interpretation of data using the simple percentage and weighted mean.
Selected forty five (45) Science teachers of Quezon National High School were used as sample
in the research study. The study revealed that most of the teachers in terms of utilization of
science curriculum, have to a great extent. “Integrate across science topics and other disciplines
that lead to meaningful understanding of concept”. In terms of the extent of teachers competency
based on NCBT the respondents revealed that they have to a great on “Demonstrate mastery of
the subject.” Majority of the respondents have high mastery on Living Things and Their
Environment and Matter. Inadequacy of the Science resource materials like textbooks and
laboratory chemicals are some of the major problems of the school.
The curriculum developer together with Department of Education should always evaluate
the new curriculum. The Head administrator of the school should give opportunities to the
teachers to attend seminars and activities that will enhance their skill and knowledge about the
new curriculum. Teachers should continue further study especially to the other field of science
aside from their field of specialization for the betterment of the learning of the students. Lastly,
the city government must provide adequate trainings and seminars in different fields of science
and allot more budgets for Science Resource materials especially Textbooks and laboratory
chemicals.
