A Prototype Design of Driver Drowsiness Detection System
Area of Research
Abstract
One of the leading causes of the increasing mortality rate in the Philippines is road
accidents. Driver error is the usual root of road accidents; one of these errors is driving while
presently sleep deprived. The driver’s lack of discipline to the road’s rules and regulations is a
major factor in contributing to the deaths of many, not only vehicle owners but also innocent
pedestrians. The aim of this study is prevention of road accidents by tracing the physiological
behavior of sleep deprived drivers by tracking their eye lid movements. A prototype shall be
implemented to serve as a detection system to indicate the sleepy state of the driver and sound
an alarm in order to prevent the impending danger that the driver might cause. The
programming and circuitry for this is made feasible with Raspberry pi3 using the OpenCV
libraries for the detection of facial features.
