Completed2016

Abstract

This study deals with the analysis of the social loafing behavior of students under the designated group activities in Language and Literature. It covers the prevalence of their behavior to not equal efforts during English activities within the context of team-based learning. The researcher decided to test the slacking behavior of the senior students of Lucena Dalahican National High School who happened to belong to the pilot section. An observation was initially conducted to notice the actual occurrence of social loafing for three days. The phenomena in the said observation were measured using a rubric. On the other hand, a questionnaire was also used to gather pertinent data. For the analysis and interpretation of data, percentage and weighted mean were used. The data revealed that the students are collectivistic individuals because they manifest interest and care to other people especially those that they considered significant to them. They also manifest interest to the progress of the group where they belong. The students also show agreement that the decision of each in the group is very vital. This constitutes to their trust to the group. The respondents also proved that they will help their group mates during conflicts even they are not satisfied with their performance. It also depicts the suitability of the respondents to group activities while doing tasks expected for them to do. Students showed their determination to complete the given task despite the struggles after them. In fact, they show their attempt to solve the conflict without the help of others. Respondents work hard when they noticed that their performance is graded. Their academic standing motivated them to participate tremendously in the group task. They strive harder because they thought that their actions and efforts will be of great help to the group. On the other hand, the students showed disagreement on the manifestations of social loafing tendency. Their behaviors clearly state that they refrain from the environment which will trigger the reduction of efforts like refusal to the assigned task and relying on their group mates’ performance. Therefore, the respondents did not show the presence of social loafing behavior. Instead, they depicted existence of social facilitation, the opposite of social loafing where students perform better in the presence of others than alone. Students simply possessed independence, collectivistic and academic-driven behavior making them harmonize to the group and avoid slacking off.
