WIZMATH: A MOBILE MATHEMATICS COURSEWARE FOR GRADE 5 STUDENTS
Abstract
"Learning mathematics is a critical process of gaining information and processing these
numeric information to applicable products. In this light, challenges that hinder students to
successfully learn the subject emerge in a way that makes it difficult. Elementary math is an area
in which students struggle directly because of the concepts being abstract and the numbers being
intimidating. Students, who are mathematically-challenged, are usually on fifth grade. Studies
show that lack of motivation and interest affects their learning preferences in mathematics.
Limited teachers’ instructional methods like lecture, demonstration, and worksheets primarily
poses the cause of this problem. Moreover, technology such as the use of smartphones and
gadgets divert students’ attention to unessential activities in school or at home.
Since the courseware developed is mobile-based, it would be more efficient for students
to use their gadgets in learning. Learners tend to be more involved in their learning activities
when they can access it from different mobile devices anytime and anywhere. It helps the
students continue learning even outside the classroom and at home. Furthermore, this innovation
will assure the success of the teaching process for the teachers and the learning process for the
students.
Existing mobile apps in mathematics such as Splash Math and King of Math hone
students’ skills in computation and numerical analysis. These mobile applications have helped
learners to explore and develop their numerical skills interactively due to its visual appeal and
entertainment value which definitely learner-centered.The project allowed students in elementary level, specifically those in fifth grade to learn
in an interactive way. Wiz math is based on the K-12 mathematics curriculum of Grade 5 pupils
in which the purpose is to provide learners activities that will stir their interest in numeracy.
This study aimed to develop a mobile courseware for mathematics subject with userfriendly interface that will be utilized as a new tool for learning that will assist students’ thinking
skills in math, and a new tool in teaching that will support teacher’s instructional needs.
Finally, unlike other courseware, this project is much interesting because the lessons are
delivered through simulation and voice narration, and it ensures assessment of learning through
quizzes and activities to test students’ learning after every discussion."
