Abstract

This study covers the linguistic analysis of Philippine newspaper editorial from lexical and grammatical category. The data gathered became the basis of the analysis in examining the prominent linguistic features of editorials, the patterns of arguments, the structure of clauses in creating a semantic concepts and the usage of English language in writing the editorial that help the researcher in evaluating and develop a recommendation in terms of writing and enhancing the use of English language as a medium. A tabular is used in data gathering. For data analysis and interpretation, percentage and weighted mean were used. The data gathered, analyzed, and interpreted revealed that newspaper editorials follows a definite format of organizing their arguments by presenting a theme, then the supporting arguments or the substation, ending it with a conclusion or the overall evaluation of the writer in regards to the theme. It had been observed that nouns dominate other parts of speech in the editorial and that editorial writers tend to use restrictive clauses to appear more concise and straightforward to their arguments. Supra-phrasal unities are present in each paragraph of the editorial wherein the number of sentences in one paragraph bears only one semantic concept. The intentions of the editorial writers were revealed from the kind of adverbial clauses and modalities they used in the editorials in which they are more concern in the idea of the possibility of an incident or scenario rather than predicting or giving an importance to what is should be. It is also observed that the amount of information the writer wants to convey were cut into a number of clauses and were connected using cohesive devices. Few rhetorical questions were used in the editorials to raise questions on certain issues that should be given a great concern. And suasive verbs and intensifiers were often used to emphasize a command or suggestions on issues presented in the editorial.
