Influence of Goin Bulilit on the Development of Children's Understanding of Gender Roles and Their Own Identities

Abstract

This study looked into the influences of Goin Bulilit when it comes to the development of children’s understanding of gender roles and identities. This is a qualitative and quantitative type of research, which employed survey and content analysis to gather data. The study was conducted in Kinagunan Elementary School Padre Burgos, Quezon and Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation in Lucena City. One hundred elementary pupils are being surveyed in this study particularly grades four, five and six while five selected BS Mass Communication students were asked to code the four episodes of Goin Bulilit. Results revealed that children watch the show just because it gives joy and laughter. Goin Bulilit provides different themes or topic every Sunday just to give entertainment to its audience. Meanwhile, the show also portrays different professions like nurse, police, teacher, doctor and other and even the third sexes which are gay and lesbian. These are their way to give entertainment by simply portraying a role like mother, father, professions and gay. It is clear that even the children as the audience of this show are aware on what is being presented in the show. On the other hand, Goin Bulilit has also the entertainment value which they provide humor to its episode although it is not consistent. Lastly, we all know that gender portrayal has a huge impact and influence specifically to the young generation and the portrayals being presented in the show might give a meaning that it is proper and good to imitate. That is why this kind of study is conducted to identify the influence of television program like Goin Bulilit.
