Stress and Coping Mechanism of Adolescent Pregnant Women Abandoned by their Partner

Abstract

The aim of the present study was to investigate the stress and coping mechanism of adolescent pregnant women abandoned by their partner. Specifically, the study sought to answer what are the encountered stress in terms of psychological well-being, raising the child, financial resource, social interaction and what are the coping mechanism of in terms of psychological well-being, raising the child, financial resource, social interaction. The study was conducted in Lucena city. There were a total of four (4) selected respondents who participate in this study. There were pregnant, ages 15 to 19 years and abandoned by their partner. This study used qualitative design. Data was collected using thematic approach. For gathering the data interviews were conducted with the participants. Result show that pregnant teenagers abandoned by their partner experience depression, physical pain that made it hard to sleep. Furthermore, the respondent reported weakening of immune system and felt irritated. Pregnant teenagers felt anxious of having a baby, also experience headache in terms of financial resource. The coping mechanism that teenagers used were accepting and rationalizing what happen and not caring what happen. Planning ahead, finding new people that will support the pregnant women. Based on the findings, the following recommendations were made a) interventions that target relational and academic needs in order to reduce the stress that they frequently reported. This reduction of stress in the lives of pregnant adolescents may reduce the negative outcomes currently associated with adolescent pregnancy and birth b) The results of this study point to the need for further research, as well as consideration of the best stress reliever while being pregnant and abandoned by their partner.
