Completed2016

Abstract

Due to stress, non-teaching professions at universities have been reported to be a misfit, and often have poor coping ability, and most of the time they consider changing jobs. Teaching personnel now a day are facing stress and the serious side of it is that some teaching personnel are going to leave this occupation. In this study, the researcher aimed to determine the perceived stress experienced of the non-teaching and teaching personnel of Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation, Lucena City, with regards to their job, lifestyle, environment and family. The researcher also aimed to know the relationship between the stress level and the stress coping strategies of the respondents. By this, it will be beneficial for the non-teaching and teaching personnel, for they will gain insight and added possible experiences that they may encounter in this kind of job. The researcher used the descriptive research design. Self- made questionnaire was used as a data gathering instrument. The study involved 50 non- teaching and 50 teaching personnel coming from different departments in the university as the respondents for the survey. The data were tabulated through the use of percentage, weighted mean, standard deviation and t-test. The researcher found out that most of the teaching personnel stated that the cause of their stress was that their class was too early as well as their last class was too late. While in the non-teaching personnel, the maximum of their stressor perceived in their job is that their salary is not fair for their work. Lack of exercise and don’t have enough sleep are the most stressors perceived by both non-teaching and teaching personnel in terms of their lifestyle. The non-teaching teaching personnel sometimes see themselves that they cannot handle their stress compare to the teaching personnel that almost never felt that way. Also, the study rejected the null hypothesis that there is no difference on the stress level between the non-teaching and teaching personnel. This only suggests that the stress level experienced by the non-teaching is significantly the same as the non-teaching personnel. It is recommended that annual medical assessments should always be given to the non-teaching and teaching personnel to ensure their health conditions. Also, always recognize the good job they have done so that the teaching and non-teaching will not feel that they don’t have any value. Furthermore, wide and deep understanding should always be given on them especially when they are angry, sad or have lots of work to finish. Sensitivity should be present when it comes on dealing with them because they might easily experience irritability especially when they have a lot of work to finish and when they have problem with their family.
