Food Security Approaches to Combat Effects of Climate Change Among Farmers in Guinayangan, Quezon

Abstract

The major purpose of the study is to determine and evaluate the food security approaches of Guinayangan, Quezon to combat climate change. In this study, farmers will be chosen purposively according to the criteria prepared by the researcher. The criteria were; their experience in farming, area of farming, types of crops planted and numbers of crop plated. The researcher devised or created an instrument in this study. It contained farmer’s demographic profile, level of awareness, the programs implemented, level of effectiveness factors affecting the implementation of the programs and the benefits perceived by the farmers on the programs. The researcher used the modernization theory which states that development in developing worlds can be attained through following the processes of development that are used by currently developed nations(Rostow,1960). In order to adapt modern strategies to cope-up with the issue on climate change, these are also implemented in developed countries. Also, the researcher used John Stuart Mill Utilitarianism: A Moral Theory in order to know if the actions taken by local government bring happiness to the beneficiaries. The Disaster Management Theory is also used in the study in order to understand some factors to consider on managing disaster like the effects of climate to agriculture. The results revealed that most of the farmers are aged fifty years old and above and had no formal education and earned a monthly income of P1, 000 – P5, 000 only coming from the income in coconut, rice, fruits and vegetables, corn, and root crops. However, according to the results farmers are highly aware on the issue of climate change. The most program used in Guinayangan, Quezon relative to climate change is the information for proper used of modern farm equipment and they are satisfied and agreed that this program is effective to combat climate change. On the other hand, the results show that these factors affecting the implementation of the programs positively and negatively, these are the human resources, physical resources, financial resources, information resources, and livelihood diversity. However, farmers said that the programs are gives more benefits to them.
