Abstract

Allen Joshua Gendrano, and Winfred Paolo Libatique, “Prototype Design of a Solar Powered Motor Driven Generator”, Unpublished project paper for the Degree Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, College of Engineering and Technical Department, Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation, February, 2015. Electricity may be considered as a basic necessity today, and just like the other basic needs, there are people who were not that fortunate to be adequately provided this need. Aeta community such as in Brgy. Tungko, Tayabas, Quezon is an example of a remote community experiencing such problem in terms of lack of electrical source and connection. From this, the researchers came up with an idea of creating a DC generator using an AC motor as its prime mover. The prototype will be using a solar panel to collect solar energy in order to charge a battery that will energize the said motor through an inverter during the start of the operation. The rotating shaft of the motor will serve as the main turning force for the rotor of the generator, containing permanent magnets to produce a rotating magnetic field. This will then be surrounding the stator containing series of coils or conductors around an iron core that creates an inductor. As the motor runs, the generator will be able to produce electricity. The idea is to design a generator where the rotor is independent from any other factors. Addition of coils in the stator would increase the generated output without affecting the performance of the rotor. Through this, increasing the output would be possible without changing the rotor components thus creating larger electricity with even a smaller prime mover. In this project, the generator will also be able to produce electricity without using any non-renewable sources like the common generators using gasoline or diesel. The researchers found that the prototype generator could produce 110.27 mW. The generator’s voltage output ranges from 0 – 8 V AC depending on the revolutions per minute of the rotor. 13 SOLAR POWERED MOTOR DRIVEN GENERATOR The generator as of now has an efficiency of 45.95 % but the output of the generator may still be increased improving its efficiency by adding and replacing better components specifications as well as the addition of more turns of coils and larger diameter of coils.
