Development and Validation of an AI-Based Courseware for Teaching English Communicative Skills

This paper developed and validated an AI-based courseware for teaching English communicative skills. A needs assessment was conducted to determine the content of the AI-based courseware based on Artificial Intelligence, which is focused on the creation of machines that can engage on behaviors humans consider intelligent. After developing the courseware, it was subjected to evaluation and validation by IT experts, English language teachers, and students. Survey questionnaires, pretest, posttest, and evaluation instruments were used in gathering data tomeasure the effectiveness of the AI-based courseware. Results showed that the targetlearners’ communicative needs included enhancing their proficiency in grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary, and spelling. The assessment was utilized in developing the syllabus containing the lessons and activities to address the identified needs of the target learners. It was then used as basis for the creation of an AI-based courseware for teaching English communicative skills. The evaluation results revealed that the AI-basedcourseware is helpful, relevant, accurate, authentic, flexible, and well-defined. Furthermore, the interactive learning module is attractive in terms of drawing, font size, layout, color, and sound. Likewise, the AI-based courseware utilizeda variety of teaching strategies and styles making it user-friendly, functionallysuitable and secure, efficient, maintainable and portable, and compatible and reliable. This interactive module can also stimulate learners’ interest, relate to their past experiences, enhance their knowledge, skills and attitude, and improve their understanding of the lessons. The pretest and posttest also indicated that the students’ performance improved through the interactive module, which indicates that the system is feasible for implementation.
