LEVEL OF AWARENESS OF THE SELECTED CRIMINOLOGY STUDENTS ON SAFE SPACES AC
Area of Research
Abstract
This study assessed the level of awareness of selected criminology students regarding
the Safe Spaces Act (RA 11313). Utilizing a descriptive research design, the study employed
face-to-face questionnaires as the primary data collection tool. The objectives were to determine
students' awareness in terms of verbal and non-verbal harassment, language use, and safety
measures, as well as to identify common violations of the Act. A total of 281 criminology
students participated in the study, drawn from a population of 1,034. Findings revealed that
respondents demonstrated a high level of awareness regarding verbal and non-verbal
harassment, recognizing acts that constitute verbal harassment under the law. Awareness of
inappropriate language use, particularly the sending of unsolicited sexually explicit messages,
was also evident. In terms of safety measures, the highest mean score indicated strong
knowledge of protective provisions under the Safe Spaces Act. However, the overall mean score
for common violations suggested that respondents sometimes experience or are aware of
infractions related to the law. Based on these findings, the researchers propose the
development of a promotional video to enhance students’ understanding of the Safe Spaces Act
and its implications.
