Design and Development of Corn Peeler and Sheller Machine for Corn Kernel Production

Completed2024

Abstract

This project study was about the modification design of a portable corn sheller and peeler machine. with the following objectives: To modify the design of portable com sheller and peeler suitable for small and medium-sized farms, To fabricate a prototype of the modified design of a portable corn sheller and peeler machine, and To test and evaluate the prototype in terms of efficiency and functionality. The design procedure involved gathering data on the existing situation of various farms in the targeted area, particularly focusing on their corn processing needs. The modification design of the Portable Corn Sheller and Peeler machine was discussed and analyzed in relevance to each machine component. Design Computations helps to determine specifications such as the machine's intended applications, Torque (260lb.in), power requirements (2.5P), operational speed (725RPM), and length of belt (42.718inches). The fabrication process included various machine shop practices such as welding, bending, cutting, and assembly of different machine parts into the frame. Finally, the prototype was evaluated and tested to measure its effectiveness and functionality. From this study, the researchers found that the modification design of a portable corn sheller and peeler machine for small to medium-sized farms could significantly improve the corn processing efficiency (496.8kg/hr). It was observed that the machine helped speed up the com shelling and peeling process by (0.138kg/sec), reducing work fatigue, minimizing labor requirements, and ultimately increasing customer satisfaction by improving the quality of the com. Additionally, the machine reduced fatigue among employees and lowered operational costs for the farms.
