Perceived Impact of Maritime Emergency Response Training on the Maritime Students
Area of Research
Abstract
Emergency response training is an integral component of maritime education, preparing students for the unpredictable challenges they may encounter at sea. Such knowledge, skill, and confidence are the key to success in emergency response on board. There are so many unpredictable tales, hazards, and risks on board that might end the life of anyone, anytime even the expert who knows more, that's why such knowledge, skills, and confidence are always asked and assessed when it comes to maritime life/industry that will never be changed as it is part of it and will always be part of it. This study assessed the perceived impact of emergency response training on maritime students using a descriptive to support the quantitative nature of the study and quantitative methodology statistically concludes without bias. The study resulted in the level of understanding of maritime students before the ERT showing knowledge gaps and also knowledgeable traits in terms of emergency response procedure, potential hazards and risks, and safety protocols and equipment usage. While after the ERT there were more improvements couple of research contexts improved a bit and still in general resulted with significant difference - same with level of preparedness, and proficiency. Nevertheless, this indicates that the ERT had a good to better impact on maritime students in terms of knowledge, confidence, and skill improvement.
Thus recommendations are drawn based on results and conclusions, to enhance emergency response training programs, incorporate game-based learning and mobile applications, enhance experiential learning strategies like onboard excursions and roleplaying, and invest in virtual reality simulations. Provide students with continous instruction from marine experts and volunteer opportunities in the fire service, Implement specialized training programs focusing on effective communication techniques, team dynamics, and leadership development to equip students with the necessary skills for emergency response scenarios.
