CHALLENGES CONFRONTING DECK CADETS OF DOMESTIC CADETSHIP: BASIS FOR INTERVENTION PROGRAM

Completed2024

Abstract

This study investigated the challenges faced by deck cadets in domestic cadetship programs within the maritime industry using a descriptive research method. Quantitative data were gathered from 35 deck cadets through a structured survey questionnaire to understand the academic, physical, and emotional difficulties they encountered. The findings revealed significant emotional challenges such as chronic stres, loneliness, and anxiety, with mean scores ranging from 3.39 to 3.61. Physical challenges, including fatigue, back pain, and nutritional deficiencies, had mean scores between 3.47 and 3.58. Environmental challenges, like limited personal space and sensory overload, scored similarly high with means from 3.48 to 3.62. Cadets coped by seeking academic support, engaging in physical activities, and maintaining social connections. The study highlighted positive aspects of cadetship, such as hands-on training and exposure to diverse procedures, but also noted communication barriers and financial constraints. Recommendations included intervention programs and mentorship for cadets, enhanced support from maritime officers, and improved intervention strategies by maritime education providers. The study emphasized the importance of addressing the challenges faced by deck cadets to support their well-being and performance, contributing to a resilient and succesful maritime workforce. Ultimately, the research highlighted the need for more complete training programs to better support cadets' overall growth and professional development.
