The Relationship Between Reading Performance of Pupils and the Monitoring Strategies Employed by the School Heads
Area of Research
Abstract
This study aimed to identify the different monitoring strategies employed by public elementary school heads and the reading performances of their students in the 4th Congressional District of Quezon. By focusing on the demographic profile of school heads, including age, sex, years of experience educational background, and administrative training, the research seeks to unveil significant differences between the responses of school heads on the selection the effectiveness of their monitoring strategies in enhancing students' reading proficiency when grouped according to their demographic profiles. The study employed a descriptive-quantitative research design, utilizing a survey questionnaire as the research instrument. all the 250 public elementary school heads served as a respondents to the study. According to the analysis, it was inferred that school heads are mostly within the age bracket of 46-55 years old, female, with 26-30 years of experience, have Master's Units, and have attended 16 to 20 trainings. The analysis revealed that instructional readers constitute the largest group, indicating a significant proportion of students receiving structured support in their reading development in Englishm while the majority of students fall within the independent category in the Filipino language. The findings indicate an overall high level of implementation of monitoring strategies, regarded by school heads as "Highly Employed." It was also disclosed that theoverall level of problems encountered by school heads is " Moderately Encountered." Since all p-values exceeded 0.05 alpha, the null hypothesis was retained for all scenarios, suggesting that the school heads' demographic profile does not significantly differ in their selection and effectiveness of monitoring strategies for enhancing students' reading proficiency. It was advised for future researchers to explore potential factors contributing to the lack of significant differences by conducting qualitative research and investigating innovative methodologies in monitoring strrategies that may unveil new correlations with reading performance outcomes, guiding future practices and interventions.
