A Design of Hydroelectric Power System for Street Lights and Flood Warning Light Indicator at Brgy. Ibabang Owain, Sampaloc Quezon

Completed2024

Abstract

During rainy seasons, heavy rain causes the river in Barangay ibabang Owain to rise and make the nearby road not passable for motorists living in the core housing. Due to poor nighttime visibility, few incidents have occurred on the road. this study presents the development of a hydroelectric power system utilizing a waterwheel installed in an irrigation system to provide electricity for streetlights and flood warning lights. The design focuses on harnessing the power of the irrigation’s falling water through a water wheel mechanism to generate sustainable electricity. The implementation of the prototype of the system created a positive result, and it can enhance visibility during nighttime hours, thereby increasing safety and reducing the occurrence of unwanted incidents in Barangay Ibabang Owain. The post-survey evaluation was answered by the 20 participants from Barangay Ibabang Owain, Sampaloc, Quezon and 5 electrical engineering experts. Respondents strongly agreed on the design of the project with an average weighted mean of 4.79 in functionality and 4.73 in terms of effectiveness. Through the integration of renewable energy technology with essential infrastructure for public safety, this project seeks to not only mitigate the risks associated with poor visibility, but also promote environmental sustainability by utilizing the natural resources available in the vicinity. Overall, the development and deployment of the prototype of this hydroelectric power system hold promise for improving the quality of life and safety of residents in Barangay Ibabang Owain while contributing to the advancement of sustainable energy solutions in rural communities.
