Completed2019

Abstract

The study aims to investigate the communicative needs of Freshmen students which will be used as basis in developing a coursebook in Purposive Communication. The study utilized the quantitative descriptive method of research to survey the communicative needs of freshmen college students. The researchers devised a needs assessment questionnaire consisting of four parts which served as a tool in determining the communicative needs of the respondents in learning Purposive Communication Course. The study was conducted in various College Programs of an Autonomous University in Quezon province. Majority of the respondents were 18-22 years old, female, and enrolled in the College of Engineering Programs. The data on needs analysis show that English language is most useful in answering national examination and in conducting a job interview. Most of the freshmen students agreed that the most important topics in purposive communication course are communication for academic purposes and communication for work purposes. Thus, the researchers recommend that authentic texts and technology-based materials that are specific to each discipline or profession and would orient students to their future workplace should be used to make English language learning more relevant and meaningful to them.
