Filipino's Life after Recovery: The Lived Experiences of Covid-19 Survivors
Area of Research
Abstract
This study aims to explore the lived experiences of Filipino Covid-19 survivors. Specifically,
this study will determine the participant’s demographic profile according to their age, sex, and
economic status, investigate how Filipino Covid-19 survivors make sense of their lived
experiences after recovery in terms of their perception to Covid-19, resiliency, and coping
strategies, and explore the impact of community to Filipino Covid-19 survivors’ recovery in the
context Sikolohiyang Pilipino. This study will use a phenomenological approach. Five (5)
participants who were diagnosed with Covid-19, had recovered, and fall under the middle and
lower-class will be virtually interviewed via Zoom, Google Meet, or Microsoft Teams. The
results of the study will provide enhancement to the awareness of the severity of the virus,
improve understanding of the experiences of Filipino Covid-19 survivors, and develop new ways
to support recovery.
The interviews were analyzed and the data were formulated into themes from three
dimensions of Lived experiences; perception to Covid-19 (themes: fear of the virus, awareness of
the severity, robbed from the normalcy of life, huge adjustment, thankful for the survival),
resiliency (themes: positive mindset, the help of other people that provided needs and support,
prayer to God, the need to provide for the family, and the need to adapt after the recovery), and coping style(themes: being positive, sharing strength with love ones, prayer, holding unto God, being content with one's life). Moreover, the community was identified to be a huge factor in both the healing process and recovery of the survivors, a provider of needs for both them and families, as well as a source of discrimination after being discharged.
The study's main findings and implications focused on improving the treatment of Filipino Covid-19 survivors, and patients, as well as improving public health protection services and providing support for Covid-19 survivors.
