SOGIE 101: Effectiveness of Online Publications in Promoting Awareness on Sexual Orientation Gender Identity and Expression (SOGIE)

Abstract

This study aims to conduct an in-depth exploration of the effectiveness of online publication materials in promoting awareness on sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression (SOGIE). The study's specific focus is to determine the respondents level of exposure to SOGIE online publication materials, level of effectiveness of online publications in promoting awareness on SOGIE in terms of: authority involvement, relevance, accuracy, purpose and objectivity, public engagement; factors affecting the effectiveness of online publications in promoting awareness on SOGIE; and identify the impact of online publication materials on their perception about SOGIE. Descriptive method research will be conducted through this study. Through a quantitative approach, the respondents of the research are composed of one hundred (100) students of any gender from Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation. Results revealed that there were exposure to SOGIE related online publication materials develops and is now becoming more recognizable to everyone. Consequently, SOGIE related online publication materials are effective in promoting awareness in terms of authority involvement, relevance, accuracy, purpose and objectivity and public engagement. However, due to the massive rampant spread of disinformation and misleading information, as well as the limitation of online resources, effectiveness of online publications in promoting awareness on SOGIE is affected. Henceforth, the reduction of the stigma associated with SOGIE through online publication materials has a significant impact on SOGIE awareness. Meanwhile, academic institutions should include sex education in their course syllabus to develop gender sensitivity among students and to create safe places for students and staff are some of the recommendations to promote awareness. Local government units should provide nonprofit LGBTQIA+ organizations with monetary assistance to be able to conduct more programs and movements are also necessary.
