Coconut Tree Disease (CTD) Scanner: An Android Application for Identifying Coconut Diseases Using Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) Deep Learning Algorithm

Abstract

In agriculture one of the major causes of low productivity are plant diseases, by determining the kind of disease it could provide a faster response to mend the disease, the android application is a self-taught system which uses Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) where the system trains itself to identify certain characteristics of a data. The android application can be used by Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) Field Officer, stakeholders and coconut farmers to detect the disease of their coconut tree, the system aims to analyze the taken picture with the use of their personal smartphone to determine what disease does the coconut tree has eliminating the time consumed in travelling of the PCA field officer to assess the problem and straight to just giving the result of the mobile application. Once the coconut farmer knows what kind of disease does their tree has, they could easily report to the PCA Field Officer. The current practice being utilized today is that the coconut farmer will report and seek assistance to the PCA field officer regarding their problem on why their coconut tree is withering. The PCA field officer will then go to the area affected to assess the problem and recommend on how to treat the specific problem. The research method used in study is a mixed of observation and some interview with PCA field officers which targets the coconut farmers. The android application analyzes the image of the suggested coconut tree or leaf that has the given disease, then it will show the results of its finding on what disease it has.
