Perceived Motivation on Multiple Piercings and Tattoos of Selected Young Adults Living in Lucena City

Completed2023

Abstract

Piercings and tattoos, as a medium of known as body alteration, made individuals feel the full control of their own body as well as increased self-confidence and esteem. According to Murphy (2019), adults enjoyed a wide berth in securing hormonal and surgical interventions to align their bodies with their desired gender appearance. Goodwin (2022) mentioned that most body modifications required parental consent until the age of eighteen. Consequently, college was the first time students could freely shape their outsides to reflect their insides. As stated by Bunag, Burgos et al. (2019), tattoos and piercings gained resurgence in continuous popularity in modern society, and the researcher aimed to determine the most popular type of body alteration and the levels of motivation according to different factors such as personal, environmental, peers, and social media when engaging in different types of body modifications, mainly tattoos and piercing/body piercings of young adults, both men and women. To measure the perceived level of motivation, the study utilized a quantitative research approach with a descriptive unit of analysis for analyzing the data that was collected from the selected respondents of the study. Each respondent was given virtual survey forms using google forms using 3-part self-made questionnaire upon acceptance and validation of the research instrument. By the end of the study, the researcher aimed to determine the most popular type of body alteration and the perceived level of motivation of individuals, mainly young adults, promote body appreciation and well-being among Filipinos, and provide significant statistical data on engagement in body modifications in the Philippines, particularly Lucena City.
