Perceived Challenge, Coping, and Self-Efficacy of Female Breadwinners in Atimonan Quezon

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the perceived social, financial, and emotional challenges experienced by female breadwinners, examine how these challenges affect their emotional well-being and self-efficacy, and the coping mechanisms they employ to deal with these challenges. This study used a narrative-inquiry approach and an interview guide protocol as an instrument for the data gathering. The participants of this study were four (4) female breadwinners, residents of Atimonan, Quezon, and 3-10 years of experience being a primary provider. Results from the study indicate that female breadwinners face social, financial, and emotional challenges. Female breadwinners struggle to balance their roles as providers, potential partners, and partners. Financial strain is also a significant issue, leading to stress and anxiety. Female breadwinners also face emotional challenges, such as burnout and negative emotions like envy and guilt. The emotion-Focused Coping style is the most used coping style in which they prioritize managing their emotional experiences to cope with stress and adverse events. Female breadwinners’ family commitments are the source of their inspiration and motivation during tough times. Changes in circumstances or how their lives change boost their self-efficacy and confidence in handling challenges.
