POLITENESS THEORY: COMPOSITION OF MESSAGES IN FACEBOOK MESSENGER BETWEEN STUDENTS AND TEACHERS OF MANUEL S. ENVERGA UNIVERSITY FOUNDATION

Completed2022

Abstract

One of the emerging difficulties about the use of text messaging via the Facebook messenger program among professors and students is impoliteness. The goal of this study is to discover politeness methods in the interaction of messages in Facebook Messenger between Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation students and teachers. A large body of literature has suggested that students use less polite language when texting their teachers, and the current study will attempt to investigate the strategies used. Because of the COVID-19 outbreak, traditional educational operations have transitioned from face-to-face to distance learning, with Facebook Messenger serving as a primary message medium. It also looks into the significant gender disparities in politeness strategies. This is a qualitative study that employs descriptive method. Brown and Levinson's (1987) four politeness methods will serve as the cornerstone for this research: Positive, Negative, Bald-On-Record, and Off-Record Strategies. Using random sampling, a total of one hundred (100) university students will be chosen. Thus, the considerable variations in politeness methods among students will be determined by other factors such as cultural differences, gender language gender performativity, and teachers' remarks to which the students respond.
