Difficulties Encountered by Grade 4 Learners in Self-Learning Modules in Mathematics Numbers and Number Sense in the Selected Schools in Pagbilao District I

Completed2022

Abstract

The study aimed to determine the difficulties encountered by learners in SLMs in mathematics numbers and number sense. It was guided by four specific questions: (1) the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of age, sex, no. of household members studying in S.Y 2021-2022, and parent/guardian highest educational attainment, (2) the perception of the learners about the self-learning modules in mathematics numbers and number sense, (3) the difficulties encountered by the learners in self-learning modules in mathematics numbers and number sense, and (4) the strategies used by the learners in accomplishing their tasks in mathematics numbers and number sense. The study utilized a quantitative design as it employed a descriptive – survey to gather data from the 50 respondents which were chosen through simple random sampling. A self-made research instrument was used to gather data. The findings revealed that the respondents are in the age of 9 – 10 years old and they have 4 – 6 no. of household members studying in S.Y 2021 – 2022. It was disclosed that the learners learn to think independently and accept responsibility in accomplishing their tasks in SLMs in mathematics numbers and number sense. Finding the common factors, greatest common factor (GCF), common multiples and least common multiple (LCM) of two numbers using the following methods: listing, prime factorization, and continuous division were the most difficulties encountered by the learners in SLMs in mathematics numbers and number sense. It also revealed strategies used by the learners are helpful for them in accomplishing their tasks in SLMs in mathematics numbers and number sense. Based on the findings and conclusions drawn from the collected data, the researcher recommended that the parent/guardian of the Grade 4 Learners must give a much time and effort for their child to teach them and they should provide their own learning space at home for their child to be more active, interested, focus, and independent. The teacher should give a brief discussion on the lesson in SLMs in Mathematics Numbers and Number Sense and should guide their learners. The Grade 4 Learners should know how to be more focused and independent in doing their tasks in SLMs in Mathematics Numbers and Number Sense.
