Challenges in conducting Library Research faced by Senior High School Students of Puerto Galera Academy: Basis for Library Collection Development
Area of Research
Abstract
The researcher determined the challenges faced by Senior High
School students of Puerto Galera Academy in Library Research to see if it
can be a basis for library collection development. This research answered the
following questions: the demographic profile of the respondents; the level of
satisfaction of users with library materials in Puerto Galera Academy in terms
of quantity and quality; and the challenges faced by the respondents when it
comes to their research. These questions were answered by using the
descriptive survey method, specifically purposive sampling knowing that there
was a criterion considered. Forty (40) students from the four (4) different
strands (GAS, ABM, HUMSS, STEM) in grade 12 of Puerto Galera Academy
were randomly selected. Data was collected from the disseminated studyrelated questionnaires, and online applications such as email or messenger
were used. The locale/study site was in Puerto Galera Academy, Province of
Oriental Mindoro. The data analysis plan was created to find the frequency
and percentage distribution, and the Likert scale was present for determining the weighted mean. The research garnered findings that most of the
respondents were from the Humanities and Social Sciences. They were
satisfied with the library materials in terms of quality and quantity, but the
challenges were still evident. These challenges include the library's lack of
newly acquired materials that are appropriate to the new curriculum and that
there were just a few references that they could use for their research. The
findings also showed that most of the challenges that they encountered came
from the inadequacy of materials and lack of information literacy. The
researcher concluded that the identified challenges needed to be addressed.
The best that the school can do is to hire a professional librarian that would
help the library to have its collection development, and the students to be
information literate in the library. In line with this, the researcher created a
collection development plan and a marketing plan as her major final output.
