Abstract

Most people experienced fear or anxiety when they must speak in front of a crowd. Public Speaking Anxiety is common, it may be hard to eliminate but, there are ways to deal with it and make you more confident when speaking in front of an audience. Public speaking anxiety refers to the fear and worries people have when holding public speeches. It is not only a disrupting type of anxiety but also a highly pervasive one. Thus, understanding public speaking anxiety is important. That is why this study, containing much of the current knowledge and discoveries on public speaking anxiety, is conducted. By now, the main cause of public speaking anxiety is thought to be related to a negative self-image. Besides, the unfamiliarity with words, the lack of experience, the unfamiliar environment, the new audience, the status difference between speakers and listeners, and the position of speakers and audiences, etc. are all stimuli of public speaking anxiety. This descriptive study was conducted to determine what factors are affecting public speaking anxiety and its impact on academic performance among Maritime Students of the Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation. It aimed to determine the public speaking anxiety of students in terms of communication apprehension, language learning process and situations, and negative attitudes towards speaking anxiety. This was small-scale exploratory research conducted to analyze the needs of students of public speaking class at the College of Maritime Education for formulating strategies that would overcome public speaking anxiety. The study was conducted using the quantitative descriptive research method.
