HEALTH HABITS OF MARITIME STUDENTS IN PREPARATION ONBOARD
Area of Research
Abstract
This study aimed to determine the impact of having good health habits among maritime
students of MSEUF for their preparation onboard. It specifically sought to identify their
exposure to different kinds of health habits, their reasons for using them, to improve their
daily living and the perceived impacts or consequences of having a good lifestyle among
them. Using the descriptive survey method, there is a total of 120 maritime students of
Manuel S. Enverga University who were randomly selected from the locale. The
questionnaire was administered online and personally to gather data for the study.
Frequency, percentage, and weighted mean were used as statistical treatment. The
maintenance of hydration is important to maintain the normal functioning of our body. Even
though many can survive without food for one day, no one can survive without water for a long time. There are a lot of reasons why people suffer from dehydration and one of the
reasons is the level of heat temperature. Staying hydrated is one of the most common
concerns of maritime students in terms of eating habits.Physical exercises help maritime
students stay physically fit and active. It is important to consider the physical standards to
stay longer at sea. Any physical disability might hinder seafarers to function and work at sea.
As a seafarer, exercising to maintain weight has a lot of benefits. As cited in the study, it
does not only have physical advantages but also helps in the mental being of a person to
reduce mental health problems. Maritime students are given a lot of benefits to being
physically active and fit through Navy Dozen Exercise while preparing on board. Most
maritime students do physical exercise to help them carry heavy things without making them
feel easily tired. Proper hygiene is one of the primary practices of maritime students as part
of their everyday lives. However, a dental checkup is the least primarily practiced by
maritime students. Maritime students must also focus on other factors in eating habits
influencing the limit of food and sugar intake, and eating vegetables to maintain a healthy
body. Creating a sleeping routine schedule like a journal for maritime students to maintain a
good pattern or track of sleeping routines. The college department of Marine Transportation
and Marine Engineering should strive to promote the physical and mental being of future
seafarers by conducting daily exercises and guidance counseling.
