Bridging the Gap: Needs Assessment of Maritime Students on their Onboard Training
Area of Research
Abstract
This research aimed to determine the needs of maritime students in their on-board
training through a gap analysis of their current learning and development as students bridging
to the skills and knowledge required in practice and training onboard among the 3rd year
maritime students of Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation. Three respondents from the
3rd year were selected using a random sampling technique based on the accessibility and
availability of the participants. The study employed the qualitative method to emphasize the
need for assessment of the data collected from an interview-type questionnaire. Open coding
analysis was used to interpret and categorize the needs of maritime students in terms of
academics, practical training, and physical fitness. As well as the strategies to overcome the
needs and the factors that influence onboard training in terms of social interaction, maritime
abilities and skills, and environmental changes. Results reveal that the maritime student
respondents, acquired learning and skills needed for the upcoming onboard training. They
considered that they have sufficient learning which was developed and gained from the
school programs and training to cope with the needs of onboard training. In addition,
researchers found that the strategies to overcome the needs of the onboard training are putting
God at your side, having sufficient financial resources, self-discipline, and hard work.
Furthermore, the study reveals that social interaction with other nationalities, proper
knowledge of skills and abilities, and the new environment onboard are the perceived factors
that may influence onboard training. Thus, the researchers recommend that maritime students
should bridge the gaps between their current know-how and the real situation on board which are significant and crucial factors in enhancing their skills and knowledge to be fit and
confident working on board and professional practice.
