SPORTS TOURISM AS TOURIST DESTINATION: A REVIEW OF SPORTS EVENTS AND FACILITIES IN LUCENA CITY

Abstract

This study was conducted to assess the sports tourism in Lucena City, particularly on the sports facilities and events. It sought to determine the demographic profile, respondents’ awareness of sports events and facilities, and its status. Moreover, Lucena City’s LGU and stakeholders' approach to new sports protocols among sports facilities and supporting improvements of sports complex and events were sought to determine. Researchers used descriptive-mixed methodology where the quantitative approach used a structured questionnaire to gather data, and the qualitative approach used an interview addressing the subproblems. Participants were restricted to chosen players, spectators, coaches, Lucena’s LGU, and stakeholders. Thoroughly analyzed, this research concluded that the people of Lucena City are generally well aware of the sports facilities and events that the city has to offer. In terms of accessibility, quality, design, and flexibility, it was revealed that facilities are easily navigated, provide quality seats for spectators and players, and bring comfortability to accommodate various sports activities. As for sporting events, sports services include staff and personnel professionally aligned in each sport. Champions are being recognized and acknowledged in ceremonies. It is inferred from the cumulative answers that most respondents were aware of the status of sporting facilities and events. According to the interview findings, each LGU and stakeholder successfully implemented new sports protocols and are eager to improve sports facilities and activities. In addition, certain adjustments, improvements, and promotions of various facilities and events have to be performed properly, adjusting services being provided to athletes, spectators, and coaches.
