Challenges Encountered by Hotel Industry Workers amidst COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract

The study focused on the challenges encountered by hotel industry workers amidst Covid-19 pandemic. Furthermore, this study analyzed how the workers handle the challenges encountered by the hotel industry workers amidst the Covid-19 pandemic in terms of salary and benefits, safety, and workloads; the extent of the challenges encountered in the current working situation as a hotel personnel in terms of protocols, housekeeping, and workloads; and the difficulty management and the experienced challenges by the hotel industry workers in the context of a pandemic. A total of 100 selected employees from the hotel were chosen through purposive sampling. The research used descriptive survey questionnaires as instruments. The target date of the conduct of the study was from August 2021-May 2022. Based on the data gathered, the following conclusions were given: most of the respondents belong to the age bracket of 18 to 25 years old, females, and single. Their monthly income is ranging from 10,000-15,000 and they are college graduates. For salary and benefits, there is a given allowance for PPE and medical supplies as an employee of a hotel and as part of the precautionary measure against Covid-19. For safety, the hotel follows the standard safety protocol mandated by the IATF. For workloads, the hotel employees meet their duties on time. For the challenges encountered in the current working situation as a hotel personnel in terms of compliance to health/safety protocols, the hotel employee always sanitizes himself/herself upon entering the hotel and for hotel operations, the hotel employee regularly disinfects rooms after guest use. Workplace discipline in following the IATF protocols are maintained. The level of practice in managing difficulties in terms of salary and benefits and workloads across age have significant difference. On the other hand, practices on safety have no significant difference across ages. The level of practice of male and female respondents in managing difficulties in terms of salary and benefits, safety, and workloads have significant difference. The level of practice of male and female respondents in managing difficulties in terms of compliance, hotel operations, and workplace have no significant difference. The level of practice of male and female respondents in managing difficulties in terms of salary and benefits, safety, and workloads have significant difference in monthly income. The level of practice in managing difficulties in terms of salary and benefits and workloads across educational attainment have no significant difference. The challenges encountered in the current working situation as a hotel personnel according to their age have no significant different for compliance to safety protocols while hotel operations and workplace have a significant difference. The level of practice of male and female respondents in managing difficulties in terms of compliance to health/safety protocols, hotel operation, and workplace have no significant difference. The level of practice of male and female respondents in managing difficulties in terms of compliance to salary and benefits, safety, and workloads are significantly different in marital status. The level of practice in managing difficulties in terms of hotel operations and workplace across monthly income have significant difference. The level of practice in managing difficulties in terms of compliance to health/safety protocols, hotel operations, and workplace across educational attainment have no significant difference. The extent of the challenges encountered in the compliance to health/safety protocols is significantly correlated with their level of practice in managing difficulties in terms of salary and benefits, safety, and workloads. The extent of the challenges encountered in hotel operations is significantly correlated with their level of practice in managing difficulties in terms of salary and benefits, safety, and workloads. The extent of the challenges encountered in hotel operations is significantly correlated with their level of practice in managing difficulties in terms of salary and benefits, safety, and workloads.
