A PROPOSED CALABARZON MEMORIAL MUSEUM

Abstract

One of the most famous historical landmarks in Los Baños, Laguna is “Pook ng Bilangguang Kampo sa Los Baños” or also known as Baker Memorial Hall. The construction took place from 1927 to 1938 during the term of Dean Bienvenido M. Gonzalez. At present, this prison camp is recognized as a significant historic property, The Japanese used this as a prison camp for the apprehended Americans and their allies in 1943 during the height of the Second World War. After the victorious Joint Raid, American and Filipino forces finally took control of the camp perimeter and with the cooperation of the individuals from the Paratroop Infantry the 2,147 detainees were released. The National Historical Commission of the Philippines declared it as a historic site on February 23, 2005. (NHCP, 2019) This research proposal is for the Rehabilitation of The “Pook ng Bilangguang Kampo sa Los Baños” in Los Baños, Laguna for the Reuse of the historical site to become a memorial and museum for the people and to chronicle all of CALABARZON. The main focus of this project is to help develop a more in-depth understanding of the history of the places in CALABARZON and to cultivate respect towards the people of CALABARZON who fought, died, struggled and sacrificed for the country across different eras of colonization and during the events of the present. (Beltran, 2019) This Proposed CALABARZON Memorial Museum is to provide Region IV-A, a memorial museum that conserves a collection of artefacts and other objects of artistic, cultural, and historical value from the past. The museum will serve as a venue for promoting enjoyment and sharing of cultural and historical heritage. The structure should be inviting and welcoming for all.
