RFID-Based Billing System for SM Supermarket Carts
Area of Research
Abstract
An innovative product with societal acceptance is the one that aids the comfort,
convenience and efficiency in everyday life. Nowadays, purchasing and shopping at the malls is
becoming a daily activity. People purchase different items and put them in trolley and proceed to
the billing counter for payments. The cashier use bar code reader for billing which is a time
consuming and usually resulted in long queues.
The main goal of this study focuses on the development of RFID – based billing system
that helped the customers to lessen their time in the cashier while shopping. This project study
was conducted with research and development to investigate and promote an effective and
efficient billing system through the application of different technological advancement.
The study consists of Arduino Uno and Arduino Mega 2560 powered by a supply voltage
of a regulated 6V DC. ZigBee and RFID reader enabled to transmit and/or receive data from the
given code of RFID tags. The use of liquid crystal display shows the information of an item
scanned by the reader.
The designed prototype’s testing has turned out to be successful especially in terms of
effectiveness. The users were able to check-out faster that lessen their time in billing. Almost all
of the items put in the cart in the actual testing were all read by the system with accurate
information. In the evaluation of the prototype, almost all of the respondents strongly agreed that
the system’s functionality and efficiency was suited in public use.
