A PROPOSED BONDOC PENINSULA HORTICULTURAL RESEARCH AND TRAINING COMPLEX
Area of Research
Abstract
Agriculture industry in Quezon Province specifically in Bondoc Peninsula is
declining due to the low in demand for coconut products. This particularly can be seen
through the low revenues for copra. (Ocampo, 2019) Hence, when the demand for copra
lowers, the coconut farmers are largely affected especially those who rely on coconut
farming as their sole source of livelihood (Ramos, 2019). With these identified gaps and
issues that hinder the development of the coconut industry, the project aims to provide a
research and training center for the people of the local community who are seeking to
learn effective approaches in the propagation and cultivation of trees and the means to
maximize their growth. Furthermore, the project aims to promote and advocate for the
development of Bio-Intensive Gardening which will be beneficial to the municipality.
Based on a review of agricultural status and observation of coconut production in
the region, the review saw that when the demand and value of agricultural produce
declines, farmers have nowhere to get additional income, (De Guzman, 2018). Therefore,
one long-term solution is to create a facility for learning and development. Through this
architectural project, spaces and other related venues for learning, for planting various
crops whenever coconut production decreases in value is proposed. The location of this
project will be in Barangay Bagupaye, at the Municipality of Mulanay in Quezon Province
which is a ten (10) minute drive from the new municipal market. According to the Philippine Statistics Authority Survey of the Agriculture Sector in CALABARZON (2004)
the farmlands in CALABARZON region are rapidly decreasing due to the widespread
development of residential and commercial buildings. Historically, culturally and
economically, Quezon Province is known for its huge agricultural contributions through
the many types of crops being cultivated. However, due to lack of education in farming,
farmers are unable to maximize the productivity of their lands. (De Guzman, 2018)
Hence, the result indicates that coconut farmers and land owners must have
enough knowledge on how to maximize their land in terms of usage for other agricultural
products. Therefore, it is important for coconut farmers to focus on the production of other
crops that will increase their income. However further study is needed to identify other
factors that will lead to the success of the proposed project.
