Common Problems Encountered by Criminology Students in the Implementation of Online Classes

Abstract

In the year 2020, a virus called Corona Virus or most commonly known as COVID 19 spread all over the world, resulting in a global pandemic. As a solution to the pandemic, the Philippine government raised a national emergency, which states that everyone living in or out of the borders of the Philippines should follow protocols such as staying at home or being in quarantine, in result most of the businesses and institutes need to shut down immediately, only businesses that offer essential products are allowed to operate. People are needed to stay in the house, and should also follow curfew. Different aspects were affected by this pandemic, as well as the education of the students. The Department of Education and Commission on Higher Education, resort to a solution since this is a modern era, technologies are widely-spread and this can help to reach out to the students even there is a pandemic. The educational institutes resort to implementing Virtual Learning or most commonly known as Online Classes. The regulation was implemented in the academic year 2020-2021. Many critiques raised their opinions about the regulation but it was still executed. Many educational institutes did a lot of adjustments as well as the students. In this study, the researchers determined the common problems that a criminology student encountered during online classes. The researchers chose criminology students from Manuel S. Enverga University randomly. The researchers invited fifty (50) respondents for the study. This study aimed to know the common problems and provide accurate solutions for raised problems in the study. The researchers used quantitative research, for the study required communicative information. They gathered data by distributing google form. Results show that criminology students have difficulties adjusting to the new method of learning through online platforms such as google classroom and zoom meetings. In addition to this, the technical difficulties encountered by the students are also one of the problems the students during online classes. The study also found that most criminology students prefer to study with other students and under the supervision of professors and instructors. In addition to this, the distractions at home such as household chores, noisy backgrounds, and other responsibilities at home also hinder the students to focus on learning.
