Diversity in Law Enforcement: Study on Work Assignment among Police Officers
Area of Research
Abstract
Law enforcement is one of the careers which in discrimination and unequal
distribution of job is practiced and is usually happening. These happened due to
different circumstances like male officers have Physical characteristics and abilities
which are more suitable in enforcing the law and apprehension of law breakers.
According to Cunningham & Ramshaw (2019), this career is also literally dominated by
men because this job is built for them, and female officers is treated just an additional
force in law enforcement because they are lacking in characteristics that a law enforcer
should acquire based on the beliefs of the researchers.
The aim of this study is to let people understand and identify the different roles of
gender in Law Enforcement and the differences in their work assignment, especially to
promote gender diversity and eliminate discrimination in the law enforcement career
and have an equal distribution of job for male and female officers. The study has the
following objectives: determine the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of
their age, sex, gender, and position in work, identify the most common work assignment
female officers are usually assigned, determine the role of gender in deciding the work
assignments of police officers, and assess the level of performance of female police
officer.
The researchers used the descriptive-survey design. The researchers used a
survey questionnaire validated by their research adviser in gathering the data. The
researchers formulated the questionnaire based on their literature survey that was used
as the primary tool in collecting the data. The instrument was structured in the modified
Likert fashion on a 4-point scale, ranging from strongly agree to strongly disagree.
The major results of the study from the data gathered and analyzed by the
researchers which answered the main objectives of the research was; majority of the
respondents were around the ages 36 to 45; mostly men; comprised largely by
patrolmen/women, police staff sergeants, police senior master sergeants, and police
corporals; and that most of them have been in service for around 6 to 10 years. female
officers are most commonly assigned in making paper works. There are preference for
men over the women in the workforce especially in going out in the field while female
officers are preferred to put more time of desk and being called on field for solving
tension in different public disorders. Female officers when it comes to their assignments
they are highly performing in paper works. The researchers chosen seminar as their
major final output. They expected that it will be helpful for the Police organization to
have equality when it comes to devision of workloads.
