Assessing the Deployment Rate of Cadets Undergoing Cadetship Training Program in a Maritime School

Abstract
Apprenticeship is very crucial to the life of a cadet because without complying with the 12-month apprenticeship, the cadet will never become a licensed seaman. This study assessed the deployment rate of cadets who have completed, undeployed, and still undertaking a cadetship program and address the factors that affect their chances to go into the cadetship program. It utilized the quantitative-descriptive method of research. The locale of this study is in Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation (MSEUF) under the department of College of Maritime Education (CME). The respondents of the study were 100 maritime students who completed their cadetship training program and also those who are still undertaking it from the graduates of MSEUF maritime students Batch (2018-2019). The researcher used a three (3) part structured type questionnaire. The first part is to find out the deployment rate of maritime students which includes cadets who completed and are still undertaking a cadetship program. The second part identifies the factors affecting deployment rate and the last part identifies the skills and competencies of apprentices needed by recommending maritime institutions and shipping companies. The research instrument was in a google form to avoid direct contact with the respondents and observe the health protocols. All maritime students of batch 2018-2019 completed their cadetship training program. Results show that the personal data of the respondents since they are subdivided into two groups mainly from the respondents’ graduate programs. The population of BSMT graduates is higher compared to the BSMARE students, which is 58% from the BSMT and 42% in the BSMARE. The researchers inferred that majority of their respondents are male topping up for 97%. The results thoroughly indicated that maritime programs are still dominated by male students. In terms of academic performance, it shows that majority of the respondents indicated that completing all the academic requirements must always be thoroughly addressed before undertaking a cadetship training program. With regards to physical wellness, it was emphasized that having an awareness of their overall health condition is exceedingly important. In the matter of gender, in a small-scale locality to a larger context, men and women are treated equally inside the CME department. Regarding financial stability, it was inferred that financial capability is important upon undertaking a cadetship program. With respect to the referral/backer, encompassing a “backer” can lead to an easy path for a cadet. Also, having shipping partners are an advantage for undertaking a cadetship program. The respondents emphasized that the medical and health problems of a cadet require very serious attention needed to be undertaken upon applying for a cadetship program. The respondents also highlighted that communication skills are indeed essential upon undertaking a cadetship program, whereas it can harness effective communication towards one another which results in a healthier workplace able to produce a maximal output.
