Mental Health Awareness of Maritime Students and Effect on the Academic Performance

Abstract

This study specifically focused on the mental health awareness of maritime students and its effect on academic performance. The researcher recognized and analyzed the effect that a student's mental health has on learning and achievement, and they realize that there's a great deal that can be done to help students with mental health issues. Mental health is a common issue with all students the main focus of the researcher is to know how maritime students aware of the mental health issues. The study addressed the researcher's objectives. Specifically, this study sought to answer the following questions: (1) What is the demographic profile of the respondent in terms of age, sex, course, and curriculum level? (2) What is the problem encountered by maritime students related to mental health? (3) What are the possible effects on the academic performance of maritime students who have a mental health problem? (4) What is the level of awareness on the importance of the mental health of maritime students? The researcher utilized the descriptive research design in seeking the answers to the above-mentioned questions. The researcher randomly selected a total of 300 maritime students from the College of Maritime Education, 100 for each curriculum level. In gathering data, the main instrument used was the survey questionnaire which they had prepared with the help and approval of the validator and research adviser. The responses for every item were considered without bias and treated statistically. The results of the study may help improve the mental health of the maritime students.
