Life After Seafaring: Filipino Seafarers and their Attitude towards Career Planning

Abstract

Career planning is a continuous process in which an individual establishes career objectives and determines how to accomplish them. Career planning refers to the process through which individuals plan their life's work. "Career Planning is a purposeful process of being aware of oneself, possibilities, restrictions, choices, and consequences; selecting career-related goals; and "professional pathing," or programming employment, school, and associated developmental experiences to offer the direction, timing, and sequence of steps to achieve a specified career objective". The major purpose of this research was to ascertain the opinions of aspiring mariners and to investigate the benefits of it and the significance of having a sound career plan for sailors. Working onboard is not an easy profession; having an excellent career plan can benefit the future career and self-development of sailors. The study employed quantitative approaches, with 100 respondents drawn from the ranks of retired Filipino seamen. Respondents filled out a questionnaire through Google Forms. The quantitative-descriptive research approach was used by the researchers. This technique utilized because it is suited for the nature of the study, Life after seafaring: Filipino Seafarers and their Attitude towards Career Planning, which entailed data collection, tabulation of the data collected, interpretation of the meaning and relevance of what will be stated, and analysis of the research's conclusions. The researcher employed a four (4) component structured type questionnaire in this investigation. The first step is to learn about the perspectives of seafarers on career planning. The second section will look into the tactics they employed for career planning. The third element is to discover what mid-45 to 50-year-olds can do to develop a successful plan for their planning, and the final part is to identify the benefits of seafarers' career planning. To prevent direct interaction with respondents and to adhere to health guidelines, the study instrument will be in the form of a Google Form. This will be tested in advance of the real data collection. Part 1 of the questionnaire entitled Benefits of Career planning has a Weighted Average Mean of 4.26 with a verbal interpretation of Strongly Agree. The first questionnaire tells that they are having a different perspective on their personal growth with a mean of 4.34 with a verbal interpretation of Strongly Agree and the least mean is most of our respondents is being efficient in their career planning with a mean of 4.4 with a verbal interpretation of Strongly Agree. Part 2 presents the strategies they used in their career planning, It says that our respondents that are continuing their education with a mean of 4.43 with a verbal interpretation of Always and the least mean is Meeting a career advisor/ Mentor with a mean of 4.3 with a Verbal interpretation of Often. Table 3a depicts the impact of occupational growth on seafarers between the ages of 45 and 50. It has a weighted average mean of 4.28 which has a verbal interpretation of Strongly Agree. The indicator which has the highest mean is most of our seafarer respondents is having the opportunities to applies their talents and expertise on career development which has a mean of 4.52 with Strongly Agree on verbal interpretation. While the least mean is 4.11 which is our respondents are pleased with their available career advancement with an Agree on verbal interpretation. Table 3b shows the effective plan for career planning in terms of shore job. It has a weighted mean of 4.30 which has a verbal interpretation of strongly agree. The highest mean is 4.37, Strongly Agree which is having a clear vision on career development. On the other side, the least mean is 4.17, which is having a dual perspective on different types of my career onboard with a verbal description of Agree. The data reveal that it focuses on having a clear vision of career development in terms of shore job options. Table 3c shows the possibility to continue the education of a seafarer after seafaring. It has a weighted average mean of 4.22 which has a verbal description of Strongly Agree. The highest mean in the indicator is continuing education getting a master's degree in maritime education which has a mean of 4.31 with a verbal description of Strongly Agree. On the other side, the least mean is 4.14 which is having other options other than being a seafarer with a verbal description of Agree. From this, it implies that the retired seafarer chooses to continue their education and getting a master’s degree in marine education. Table 4 shows the effective plan for career planning. It has a weighted average mean of 4.37 which has a verbal description of Strongly Agree. The highest mean in the indicator is the readiness to develop the skills of a retired seafarer which has a mean of 4.54 with a verbal description of Strongly Agree. On the other
