PERCEPTION ON THE USE OF SIMULATOR IN THE TRAINING AND FAMILIARIZATION PROGRAM OF 2ND YEAR AND 3RD YEAR CADETS OF MSEUF
Area of Research
Abstract
This study aimed to determine the perception of the use of simulator in the training and familiarization of 2nd year and 3rd year cadets of MSEUF. The gathering of data was conducted in the College of Maritime Education of the Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation through descriptive research. A total of 100 student respondents who were enrolled in the 2nd and 3rd curricular level who used the simulator participated on the data gathering process.
Result revealed the perception level on the use of simulator in the training and familiarization program of 2nd year and 3rd year cadets of MSEUF in the selected studdents from 2nd and 3rd year students.
As shown in the findings, the simulator is a better tool for the traning program of cadets before on board ship because simulator enhances the knowledge and the learning of the students on how the work on board is done such as watchkeeping, maneuvering, maintenance, safety procedure, and others. Although there were some problems encountered by the students during the use of simulator, the study still suggests that use of simulator is a better tool for training and familiarization of the students.
Meanwhile, the problems encountered on the use of simulator was that the students cannot bridge concepts taught inside the classroom when it is applied to life-like activities using the simulation models and activities; they also could not identify and manipulate shipboard equipment and facilities while using the simulator; they cannot play various roles of a cadet while doing simulation activities.
Since the martime students were concerned in this matter, the researchers recommend that the College of Maritime Education should be given more time to use the simulators for the students to learn faster, and know what they will do onboard ship and have a knowledge on safety features reagarding the programs in the simulator. Also additional training on the part of the personnel-in-charge (instructor) must be conducted for the purpose of familiarization and continuous learning and development about the machine/system. The students must be oriented properly about the use of simulators and the safety precautions before using it. They should also be given familiarizion training on the system and how the simulator works.
