Determining the Reasons of the Seafarers in Quitting their Sea Jobs

Abstract

Seafarers are one of the highest salaried jobs all over the world but despite good opportunities, seafarers also experience dilemmas while onboard the vessel. This study aimed to determine the factors that affect seafarers to quit their job despite good opportunities and high salaries. It utilized the qualitative-descriptive method of research. Purposive sampling was applied to the study. It is the process where the researchers select a sample based on their experience or knowledge when it comes to working onboard the vessel. The locale of this study was in Lucena City, Quezon Province. The respondents of the study were 14 Filipino. The research instrument was in a google form to avoid direct contact with the respondents and observe the health protocols. The researchers gathered information by using online interviews due to CoVID-19. The researchers used a qualitative-descriptive method of the research. Results show that most of the respondents are slightly agree about health problems like high blood pressure and vertigo, easily getting weak and tired during heavy workload on board, experiencing homesickness and, experiencing depression; most of the respondents slightly agree to have a better career after quitting sea jobs. Hence, the output of the study may help the aspiring seafarers and seafarers to have long term plans.
