Abstract

This study focused on analyzing the Predispositions of Student Beauty Queens on Body Dysmorphic Disorder. This study identified the body mass index of the subjects through their background characteristics, assessed the subjects’ understanding of self-using the congruence test and analyzed the contributory factors in the development of body dysmorphic disorder. It employed the descriptive research design wherein case studies were used. This study was conducted in a higher education wherein there were five (5) subjects who were purposively chosen. The gathered data in congruence test were scored based on its given scoring procedure while thematic analysis was used for the analytical framework. Analysis of the results reveals that majority of the subjects have underweight body mass index because being a beauty queen should represent a slim body. Also, the congruence test shows that 1 out of 5 subjects have an incongruent relationship between her self-image and ideal-self-image because of the society and media influences. Lastly, the researcher found out that the contributory factors in the development of body dysmorphic disorder were as follows: socio-economic status, environment, media, and relationship with peers, and family influences. Additionally, the results show that the beauty ideals of society affect the candidates’ perception about beauty and making them think of their flaws which encourage them to change something on their appearance. There is a significant influence to the student beauty queens’ behavior, personality and self-perception. Mental Hygiene Program for student beauty queens was proposed by the researcher to help them sustain their good and effective mental health.
