CAS extends 'Apple+Pen' community service program to Badjao learners
As one of the University's flagship Community Extension Service (CES) programs titled 'Apple+Pen,' 100 Badjao learners from Barra Elementary School received school supplies from the Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation (MSEUF) College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) , Jul. 19.
Student leaders and faculty members from CAS worked together to distribute school supplies and other items such as umbrellas and boots, which the Badjao learners can use for the upcoming school year.
According to Dexter Hermidilla, a faculty member and the CES Program Coordinator of the CAS, the donated items were tailored to meet the students' needs.
“This is a flagship program of CAS. 'Apple' because we provide food for malnourished and underprivileged Badjao people, and 'Pen' because we contribute to their education by providing school supplies and literacy programs,” Mr. Hermidilla shared.
Mr. Hermidilla also mentioned that in addition to providing school supplies, they have now launched an ‘Adopt-A-Library Program.’
“In Barra, they don’t really have a proper library. You may notice the stage is divided into two; the back part is the library, but it is not ideal due to the noise. They told us they would give us a classroom, and we will convert it into a library,” Mr. Hermidilla added.
They also donated books and an electric fan to the school after conducting a storytelling session for the students.
This effort aligns with one of the University's trifocal function, which to to to help the community.
