Envergan journalist, newswriting champion in Luzonwide press conference
Envergan campus Journalist Jasper Tabernilla, a financial management student and one of the managing editors of The Luzonian, the official collegiate student publication of Manuel S. Enverga University (MSEUF) finished as champion in the Filipino newswriting category during the Luzonwide Higher Education Press Conference (LHEPC), March 21, in Naga City.
Tabernilla bested more than 30 other newswriting regional winners from the Ilocos, Cagayan, Cordillera, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, and Bicol Regions.
Tabernilla’s strong news headline and lead, coupled with properly structured content and best angle were the reasons for the award, according to John Rover Sinag, one of the technical advisers of The Luzonian.
“When I asked Jasper about his work, and when he let me read his entry for the competition, the moment I read the headline and the lead, there’s no doubt that the news article will land as the champion,” Sinag shared.
“The headline is perfectly written and I cannot think of a better headline and news angle than Jasper’s work. His lead was also strong and contained the necessary information,” Sinag added.
Tabernilla also shared why he won as the best news writer in Luzon.
“Honestly, I did not train before going to Naga to compete at the Luzonwide Higher Education Press Conference. Sa loob ko po kasi ay i-enjoy ko lang talaga ‘yung competition kasi first time ko naman and it will be a good learning experience na rin. Siguro what made me the best Filipino news writer in Luzon is that every day may dalawang balita akong ini-edit araw araw at nakasanayan ko na ring gumawa ng balita. Siguro sa experience na rin po (I thought I would just enjoy the competition as a good learning experience since it was my first time to join. What helped me to be the best newswriter in Luzon was that I usually edit two news reports every day and I developed the skill to write news reports. It was experience that honed my skills),” Tabernilla remarked.
“Matagal na rin naman po akong news writer. From grade 9 until now gumagawa na po ako ng balita since ito yung forte ko. So ‘yung pagkapanalo ko po ay parang pinagsama-samang learning and experience from all the years na sumusulat ako ng balita. Aside from that po, syempre nandun din yung support na nakuha ko from people lalo na sa loved ones ko and of course sa The L peeps. So ayun po, hard work, effort, and support from my peers. 'Yun po siguro ang mga dahilan that made me the best newswriter in Filipino in Luzon, (I have been writing news reports for a long time. I have been writing news reports since grade 9 up to now, it has become my forte. So, my winning was a combination of learning and experience throughout the years that I have been writing. And then, there is the support from my loved ones, my peers and The L staff. So there, I owe my victory as the best newswriter in Filipino to these factors),” Tabernilla added.
